Wystawa pt. "The Sword-Swallowing Toad" przekształci pomieszczenia Austriackiego Forum Kultury w Warszawie w futurystyczny kosmos, pozwalający penetrować nowe, nieodkryte sfery.
Marianne Vlaschits (ur. 1983, Wiedeń) tworzy instalacje, które sprawiają wrażenie zagarniać przestrzeń wystaw. Jej prace są figuratywne, a narracja stanowi ich centralny element. Artystka często opowiada fikcyjne, nieosadzone w czasie historie o odległych galaktykach, pokazuje nowe, alternatywne modele rzeczywistości. Wystawą pt. "The Sword-Swallowing Toad" nawiązuje do patriarchalnego sposobu myślenia o świecie i umieszcza go w nowym kontekście. Alegorycznej interpretacji, według której nienasycona macica wędruje w ciele niczym ropucha, przeciwstawia inną, prezentując nowy model relacji człowiek–przestrzeń (życiowa) – świat. Co za tym idzie, artystka wyobraża sobie odmienne niż dotychczasowe zależności społeczno-polityczne, a także te wynikające z polityki siły.
Artystyczną wizję przyszłości, jaką roztacza Marianne Vlaschits, dopełnia na wystawie pozycja historyczna: prace artystki Zofii Rydet (1911 Stanisławów – 1997 Gliwice). Cykl pt. "Mój świat uczuć i wyobraźni" powstały w latach siedemdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku przedstawia w poetyckich fotomontażach pejzaże fantastyczne, miejsca surrealne. Postaci ludzkie – często ciała kobiece albo manekiny, jako ich idealizacje – pojawiają się w nich sporadycznie. Przeważają puste płaszczyzny, bezkresne przestrzenie wyglądające na opuszczone, toteż nieodłączną cechą tych obrazów jest utajone zagrożenie, wskazujące na niepewność egzystencji ludzkości.
Dialog dwóch artystek – z dystansu czasowego wynoszącego bądź, co bądź prawie pół wieku – ujawnia wciąż tę samą naglącą aktualność poruszanych przez nie treści. Ich strategie artystyczne polegają na formowaniu wizji alternatywnej przyszłości, aby krytycznie odzwierciedlić teraźniejszość. Plasują się tym samym na zupełnie nadzwyczajnym, a przez to tym bardziej fascynującym miejscu: na styku między sztuką, polityką, nauką, technologią i popkulturowymi fantazjami o lepszym jutrze.

The exhibition “The Sword- Swallowing Toad” transforms the space of the Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw into a futuristic cosmos, which allows new, undiscovered spheres to be explored.
Marianne Vlaschits (* 1983 Vienna, Austria) creates expansive installations that, in addition to the visual and the objective, also include a narrative as a central element of her works. She uses fiction, to tell stories of distant galaxies and thus disputes other, alternative models of reality. In “The Sword-Swallowing Toad”, she takes up and decontextualizes a male-centred worldview. In the exhibition, Vlaschits takes up an allegorical interpretation of the uterus as a toad, which goes on a wandering inside the female body when not satiated. She contrasts this narrative with a new interpretation and thus opens up a new model for the relationship between man - (life) space - world and its social and power-political implications.
The artistic future vision of Marianne Vlaschits will be presented next to a historical position, namely with works by the artist Zofia Rydet (1911-1997 Gliwice, Poland). Rydet's series "A World of Feelings and Imagination" from the 1970s depicts fantastic landscapes in poetically composed photomontages of places seemingly outside this world. Occasionally, human figures - often female bodies or their idealized embodiments in the form of mannequins - appear to the fore. While empty spaces dominate, the images of these fields contain a latent threat, pointing to the uncertain existence of humanity itself.
The dialogue between the two artistic positions that lie almost half a century apart from one another reveals the unchanged timeliness and urgency of their content. Their artistic strategies, based on the formulation of a futuristic vision, examine current conditions and critically reflect upon today. Thus, they stand at an extraordinary and all the more fascinating interface between art, politics, science, technology and pop culture fantasies of the future.
