Artysta maluje niewielkich formatów portrety w formie popiersia.
Maciej Salamon to niestrudzony propagator szlachetnej sztuki rysunku.

‘When the pandemic came, it occured to me that the things I used to be doing so far, I cannot do them (or I don’t have to do them) anymore. So after all those years, I’ve recalled that I actually like to paint’ Maciej Salamon

Over the last years, Maciej Salamon have been involved in various art forms, mainly drawing, graphics, graphic design, animated films and video creation, as well as music.
He was also an artistic life organiser and a tattoo artist.
Salamon is a graduate, and currently a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. According to him, the academic education somehow suppressed the natural pleasure he used to take from painting, and only the strange time of pandemic lockdown has reminded him of it.
That was when he came up with the idea of establishing the M. Salamon Portrait Company. It is a direct reference to the famous portrait company of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, inaugurated in 1928.
In Salamon’s case, the idea of establishing such a company was born out of a desire to fill up the free time ‘gifted’ by the pandemic (a kind of self-ironic art therapy). He also needed to find a way to support his family.
In the metaphorical sense, his project is a bittersweet commentary on the economic situation of a contemporary artist left to fend for himself in the difficult times of the plague.
The artist paints small-format portraits in the form of busts. They are like quick sketches, built with decisive lines. Salamon’s portrait company operates in his home — the artist makes portraits based on pictures sent to him, and like most parents working remotely today, divides his time between painting and trivial housework, broadening the definition of the term. During these few months, the artist has managed to paint more than 100 portraits, mainly of the creative minds from the thirty-plus generation based in the Tricity region.
We have been talking to Maciek Salamon about an exhibition in the Zachęta Project Room for several years. After ‘the artist regained his faith in painting’, the idea to show the portrait project, as well as his other recent paintings in our gallery was born. The tour of the exhibition ends in an interactive space where the viewers can draw their own composition and hang it on a specially allocated wall, as they in a way become the co-authors of the exhibition. Maciej Salamon is a tireless promoter of the noble art of drawing.
