W ramach cyklu odsłuchów "Drżenie świata" w Departamencie Obecności będziemy wspólnie eksplorować potencjał dźwięku, jako narzędzia pozwalającego analizować, obserwować i odczuwać katastrofę klimatyczną. Czy uważne słuchanie może pomóc nam dostroić ciała, zmysły, emocje i umysły do przemian zachodzących na skalę planetarną? Czego uczy nas brzmienie topniejących lodowców, tonących wysp i wymierających zwierząt, nagrania życia na dnie oceanu i w głębi puszczy lub zazwyczaj niesłyszalne dźwięki elektryczności, prądów morskich, promieniowania, trzęsień ziemi i procesów geologicznych?
W czasie pierwszego odsłuchu przekonamy się, na ile dźwięk jest w stanie przybliżyć nam to, co dzieje się odległych geograficznie miejscach, w których skutki katastrofy klimatycznej są słyszalne gołym uchem. Album „Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone” Jany Winderen to kompozycja stworzona z nagrań wykonanych na Morzu Barentsa w okolicach Spitsbergenu, w tak zwanej strefie marginalnej lodowca (marginal ice zone) – miejscu, w którym wieczny lód spotyka się z morzem. Z powodu ocieplenia klimatu strefa, która w okresie wiosennym pełni funkcję jednego z największych magazynów dwutlenku węgla na planecie przechodzi radykalne przemiany, wpływające na życie wielu organizmów – kwitnącego w tej okolicy planktonu, który produkuje ogromne ilości tlenu, rozmnażających się tam dorszy czy migrujących humbaków i orek. Jednocześnie konsekwencje zmian klimatu splatają się z globalną geopolityką – strefa jest obecnie przedmiotem sporu rozwijającego się pomiędzy państwami, m.in. Rosją i Norwegią oraz wielkimi korporacjami, które łakomie spoglądają na uwalniane spod topniejącego lodu zasoby naturalne.
Jana Winderen ukończyła studia artystyczne na Goldsmiths, University of London, studiowała także matematykę, chemię i ekologię ryb na Uniwersytecie w Oslo. W swojej twórczość zajmuje się środowiskami dźwiękowymi i ekosystemami, które ze względów fizycznych i słuchowych są trudno dostępne dla człowieka. Tworzy m.in. wielokanałowe instalacje dźwiękowe oraz koncerty, które wykonywała w najważniejszych instytucjach i przestrzeniach publicznych w Ameryce, Europie i Azji.

"Trembling World" is a series of listening sessions organized by the Department of Presence, dedicated to exploring the potential of sound as a tool for analysing, observing, sensing and feeling the climate catastrophe. Can cautious listening help us to attune our bodies, senses, emotions and minds to the changes happening on a planetary scale? What can we learn from the sounds of melting glaciers, drowning islands and animals dying out; recordings of life on the bottom of the ocean and in the depths of the forest or the usually inaudible tones generated by electricity, sea currents, radiation, earthquakes and geological processes?
During the first listening session we will discover if sound can bring us closer to geographically distant places where the effects of climate catastrophe are clearly audible. The album “Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone” by Jana Winderen is composed of recordings done in the Barents Sea around Spitsbergen, in the so called marginal ice zone – an area where the sea ice meets the open sea. During spring the zone is one of the most important CO2 sinks on the planet. Because of the warming climate it is currently undergoing rapid changes which affect the lives of many organisms, among them blooming plankton, which produces huge amounts of oxygen, cods spawning in the area and migrating humpbacks and orcas. At the same time the consequences of climate change intertwine with global geopolitics – the zone is currently a matter of dispute between nation states, among them Norway and Russia, and powerful corporations, all interested in exploiting resources freed by the melting ice.
Jana Winderen is an artist educated in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology from the University of Oslo. Jana focuses her work around audio environments and ecosystems which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally. Amongst her activities are immersive multi-channel sound installations and concerts, which have been performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces in America, Europe and Asia.
