Podczas trzeciego wieczoru w Zachęcie poświęconego dziedzictwu amerykańskiego awangardowego eksperymentu edukacyjnego znanego jako Black Mountain College*** będziemy sięgać w przeszłość, aby kreślić wizje przyszłości. Wsłuchamy się w dzisiejsze reinterpretacje idei R. Buckminstera Fullera – śmiało kreślone wizje przyszłości oraz poszukiwania architektury odpowiadającej na wyzwania XX i XXI w. Wychodząc od wspólnotowych wymiarów eksperymentów artystycznych w uczelni – np. sposobów funkcjonowania tamtejszej jadalni – spróbujemy zastanowić się nad dzisiejszymi formami wspólnotowego tworzenia nowych idei.

Wystąpienie poświęcone będzie eksperymentom artystycznym prowadzonym w Black Mountain College (szczególnie przez Johna Cage’a), z jednej strony akcentując m.in. rolę jadalni dla życia uczelni oraz organizowanych tam koncertów, z drugiej zaś skupiając się na roli dokumentacji i świadectwa uczestników dla przemian kultury doby (neo)awangardy.

W trakcie swojego nowego performansu artysta dzieli się czułością z publicznością oraz zachęca do stworzenia czegoś wspólnego. Performansowi Filipa Kijowskiego towarzyszy ruch. Jest on rodzajem dopowiedzenia do słów, post scriptum, które niesie ważną dla obu stron treść.
Filip Kijowski jest choreografem, performerem i queerowym bibliotekarzem. Jego praktyka artystyczna opiera się na interdyscyplinarnym spotkaniu choreografii, tańca i aktywizmu poprzez improwizację i używanie metod NVC (Nonviolent Communication).

Alka Nauman jest queerową choreografką, badaczką i działaczką społeczną, pracującą między Londynem a Warszawą. Lucie Palazot jest tancerką, choreografką i performerką oraz producentką projektów artystycznych, mieszkającą i tworzącą pomiędzy Francją i Wielką Brytanią. Alka i Lucie spotkały się w London Contemporary Dance School, a program, w którym tam uczestniczyły, był bardzo związany z metodologią wypracowaną w BMC: oparty na indywidualnościach, eksperymentach, wspólnotowym tworzeniu, dzieleniu się pozycją lidera i kolektywnej współpracy. Pracują razem od dwóch lat, eksplorując absurd, zabawę i humor jako strategie badania i rozwiązywania problemów społecznych.
*** Black Mountain College to niezależna szkoła artystyczna założona w 1933 roku w miasteczku Black Mountain w Północnej Karolinie. W BMC uczestniczyli m.in. John Andrew Rice, Josef i Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Hazel Larsen Archer, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, M.C. Richards, Suzi Gablik, Willem i Elaine de Kooning, Lawrence Kocher, Walter Gropius, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, którzy rozwijali radykalny i wyzwalający model edukacji artystycznej opartej o idee Johna Deweya i praktykowany podobnie do kontekstu i programu Bauhausu. W modelu tym przedkłada się niezależną pracę artystyczną nad sztywne programy nauczania; koleżeńskie relacje w ramach wspólnoty artystów nad hierarchiczną strukturę nauczycieli i studentów oraz ciągłą interakcję pomiędzy różnymi dziedzinami sztuki nad zamknięcie się każdej z nich w sobie. BMC zakończył działalność w roku 1957, wywierając przez 24 lata istnienia ogromny wpływ na rozwój idei, obecnych w sztuce do dziś.

Warsaw Bauhaus collective, Zachęta National Gallery of Art and the CalArts Center for New Performance invite you to a series of events titled 🧠EUTOPIA: Black Mountain CollAge № OnE🧠. The SOS series is dedicated to the legacy of the American avant-garde Black Mountain College and to the "Theater Piece № 1" by John Cage and Others. The events will take place at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art (Multimedia Room) and the experimental art space Curie City at 36 Tamka St and will include: a facto-fictional space installation (CurieCity), interviews, pseudo-workshops, film screenings, performative actions and lectures, and an improvised choreographed premiere.
Evening #3:
Community creation of new ideas
During the third evening at the Zachęta devoted to the legacy of the American avant-garde educational experiment known as Black Mountain College***, we will look to the past to create visions of the future. We will listen to contemporary reinterpretations of R. Buckminster Fuller’s ideas - bold visions of the future and the search for architecture that meets the challenges of the 20th and 21st centuries. Starting from the communal dimensions of artistic experiments at the BMC - e.g. the ways in which the local dining hall functioned - we will try to reflect on today’s forms of communal creation of new ideas.

Antoni Michnik is a historian of the culture, performer, curator, co-founder of the research-performance ETC Group, and, since 2013, editor of the magazine "Glissando".

🟢 performative lecture by Paweł Szroniak
The presentation will be devoted to the artistic experiments conducted at the Black Mountain College (especially by John Cage), emphasising, among other things, the role of the dining hall for the life of the college and the concerts organised there, on the other hand focusing on the role of documentation and the testimony of the participants for the cultural transformations of the (neo)avant-garde era.
Paweł Szroniak is a literary scholar, curator, editor, creator of a series of events dedicated to experimental music Rozkurz, historian of the avant-garde.
🟢 Performance in the form of a live radio play composition by Zajwert
A radio play musical form dedicated to the work and thought of Buckminster Fuller, referring in its formal elements to his arch aesthetics, built around selected quotations from Fuller, the composition is an authorial commentary on the actuality of selected themes of his thought.
Zajwert is a musical project by Paweł Krzaczkowski, combining elements of experimental pop and composed avant-garde music. Paweł Krzaczkowski is a musician, curator, essayist, poet and librettist.
🟢 Filip Kijowski’s performance "P.S."
During his new performance, the artist shares tenderness with the audience and encourages them to create something together. Filip Kijowski’s performance is accompanied by movement. It is a kind of addition to the words, a post script, which carries a mutually important content.
Filip Kijowski is a choreographer, performer and queer librarian. His artistic practice is based on an interdisciplinary meeting of choreography, dance and activism through improvisation and the use of NVC (Nonviolent Communication) methods.

Travis Preston is an acclaimed theatre and opera director, Dean of the CalArts School of Theater and Executive Artistic Director of the CalArts Center for New Performance (the CalArts - California Institute of the Arts).

Zbigniew Libera is an artist operating both in Warsaw and elsewhere
🟢 premiere of the dance piece "Interlude 21", choreographed by Alka Nauman and Lucie Palazot, commissioned and produced by the Warsaw Bauhaus Foundation and Zachęta National Gallery of Art and supported by the CalArts - California Institute of the Arts. Other partners: Curie City Gallery Warsaw, Collectif Parade - co-producer (France), Centre National de la Danse (CND Pantin), Micadanses (Lucie Palazot - fellow Adamica 2021).
"Interlude 21" is inspired by the outstanding artist, co-founder and lecturer of the Black Mountain College, Ani Albers. It can be seen as a dance lab based on the practice of listening in order to develop a framework to make serendipities happen.
Alka Nauman is a queer choreographer, researcher and social activist working between London and Warsaw. Lucie Palazot is a dancer, choreographer, performer and producer of art projects, living and creating between France and the UK. Alka and Lucie met at the London Contemporary Dance School, and the programme they participated in there was very much related to the methodology developed at the BMC: based on individuality, experimentation, community creation, sharing leadership positions and collective collaboration. They have been working together for two years, exploring absurdity, playfulness and humour as strategies for exploring and addressing social issues.
*** Black Mountain College was an independent art school founded in 1933 in the town of Black Mountain, North Carolina. BMC participants have included John Andrew Rice, Josef and Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Hazel Larsen Archer, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, M.C. Richards, Suzi Gablik, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Lawrence Kocher, Walter Gropius, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, who developed a radical and liberating model of artistic education based on the ideas of John Dewey and practiced similarly to the Bauhaus context and program. This model favoured independent artistic work over rigid curricula; collegial relationships within a community of artists over a hierarchical structure of teachers and students; and continuous interaction between different art disciplines over the self-containment of each. The BMC came to an end in 1957, exerting an enormous influence during its 24 years of existence on the development of ideas that are still present in the arts today.

🟢 premiere of the dance piece "Interlude 21", choreographed by Alka Nauman and Lucie Palazot, commissioned and produced by the Warsaw Bauhaus Foundation and Zachęta National Gallery of Art and supported by the CalArts - California Institute of the Arts. Other partners: Curie City Gallery Warsaw, Collectif Parade - co-producer (France), Centre National de la Danse (CND Pantin), Micadanses (Lucie Palazot - fellow Adamica 2021).
"Interlude 21" is inspired by the outstanding artist, co-founder and lecturer of the Black Mountain College, Ani Albers. It can be seen as a dance lab based on the practice of listening in order to develop a framework to make serendipities happen.
Alka Nauman is a queer choreographer, researcher and social activist working between London and Warsaw. Lucie Palazot is a dancer, choreographer, performer and producer of art projects, living and creating between France and the UK. Alka and Lucie met at the London Contemporary Dance School, and the programme they participated in there was very much related to the methodology developed at the BMC: based on individuality, experimentation, community creation, sharing leadership positions and collective collaboration. They have been working together for two years, exploring absurdity, playfulness and humour as strategies for exploring and addressing social issues.
*** Black Mountain College was an independent art school founded in 1933 in the town of Black Mountain, North Carolina. BMC participants have included John Andrew Rice, Josef and Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Hazel Larsen Archer, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, M.C. Richards, Suzi Gablik, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Lawrence Kocher, Walter Gropius, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, who developed a radical and liberating model of artistic education based on the ideas of John Dewey and practiced similarly to the Bauhaus context and program. This model favoured independent artistic work over rigid curricula; collegial relationships within a community of artists over a hierarchical structure of teachers and students; and continuous interaction between different art disciplines over the self-containment of each. The BMC came to an end in 1957, exerting an enormous influence during its 24 years of existence on the development of ideas that are still present in the arts today.
